North West to test 600 busses for roadworthiness

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa has announced that his department will as from Tuesday embark on a ten days operation that focuses on testing of all busses in the province for roadworthiness. The operation is intended to guarantee a safer bus transport system during and beyond Easter and leading up to the Football World Cup in June.

According to MEC Yawa, the operation will be structured in such a way that it does not unnecessarily disrupt the routine operations of bus companies operating in the province.

Official instruction as per Road Traffic Act has been given to all bus companies to avail their busses for roadworthiness test at testing centres in their respective municipalities. Busses found in critical condition will be discontinued for use and those found with minor defects will be given a second chance and subjected to retest after repairs. Twenty three busses were found unroadworthy and discontinued last year when provincial traffic authorities embarked on a similar operation that tested 345 busses.
