North West taxi accident leaves villages in darkness

Majemantsho and Lomanyaneng villages outside Mahikeng experienced a blackout after a road accident in which a taxi driver was seriously injured on the Lotlhakane road outside Mahikeng Wednesday evening.

The taxi driver in his 40s was reportedly driving from Lotlhakane village towards Mahikeng at around 18h30 when reportedly when he lost control of his vehicle after hitting a cow that was crossing the road.

The vehicle veered off the road and was stopped by an electric pole on the side road near Setumo High School in Majemantsho village. Rescue teams had to wait for electricians from Eskom before using the jaws of life to free the injured driver from the wreckage as a transformer hanged dangerously on top of the taxi and live wires crossed the road.

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Desbo Mohono in wishing the injured motorist a speedy recovery appealed to owners to keep their animals off the road and for motorists to be on the look-out for stray animals.

Police might not be in a position to trace the owner of the cow as some villagersallegedly rushed to the scene with wheelbarrows, pots etc, to help themselves to the carcass before police arrived.

Mohono condemns in the strongest terms the looting of the carcass at the accident scene as the branded cow hide was vital evidence that might have assisted the police to trace the owner of the cow in order to charge him for animal neglect that caused the accident that nearly cost the taxi driver his life.
