North West targets heavy and commercial drivers for skills enhancement programme

In an effort to reduce road accidents involving busses, taxis and other commercial vehicles, the North West Department of Public Safety embarks on a recruitment drive for its road safety driver’s skills enhancement programme. The provincial initiative that is targeted at heavy motor vehicle drivers from the public transport system, transport companies, government and women drivers closes on Tuesday, 7 July 2009.

“The objective of the programme which is in its second year is to enhance driving skills of public driving permit holders and to promote driver education in the province. It also serves as an incentive to the business sector to invest in advanced driver training to obtain excellent return on investment in the form of reduced maintenance costs and improved productivity,” says MEC Howard Yawa.

Among the benefits that heavy motor vehicle drivers for busses, rigid trucks (with and without trailer), articulated truck and panel or delivery van will derive from participation in the programme is recognition as provincial road safety ambassadors ,enhanced professional driving image and improved standards and knowledge of driving.

Forms for interested participants are available at district road safety offices throughout the province. 80 women drivers and 100 commercial vehicle drivers are targeted for the programme which will culminate to a provincial competition to be held as from 13 to 15 August 2009 in Mafikeng. The winners at this level will proceed to represent the province at the national driver of the year competition to be held 23 to 26 October 2009 in Limpopo.

The initiative is sponsored by Man Truck and Bus and Atamelang Bus Transport and is a partnership of the North West Department of Public Safety with RAC Driving Solutions, a subsidiary of Risk Administrative Consultants (Pty)
