North West stakeholders to focus on crime in Bojanala

The North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison is to host a crime prevention summit to review the effectiveness of crime prevention strategies throughout communities in Bojanala Platinum District. The two-days district assessment and engagement is to be held in Rustenburg as from Monday next week.

The objective of the summit is to integrate crime prevention strategies and develop the Bojanala District Prevention Crime Programme of Action in order to intensify the onslaught against crime in the Rustenburg, Brits and Mmakau Policing Clusters.

It is further aimed at creating safe and secure communities, restoring investment confidence and to identify problem areas as well as concretise strategies to deal with such problems.

MEC Desbo Mohono who is deliver the keynote address on the opening day of the summit says that Bojanala District was prioritised summit for the summit due to its high crime levels in the province is targeted at strengthening the four pillars of the National Crime Prevention Strategy which are:

  • Crime prevention through effective criminal justice process
  • Crime prevention through public values and education
  • Crime prevention through environmental design
  • Prevention of trans-national crimes.

According to Mohono, the summit is intended to propose methods of participation in crime prevention by organs of civil society/community-based structures; that include partnerships with municipalities, sector departments, the business sector, traditional leaders, funding organisations, non-government organisations, community based organisations and faith based organisations.

The summit to be hosted in partnership with the South African Police Service, North West Business Against Crime, Provincial Community Policing Board and Bojanala Platinum District Municipality will also take into cognisance existing strategies and government priorities that include establishment and coordination of community safety forums, anti-stock theft forums, street committees and community policing forums.
