The North West Provincial government has committed R17 million towards reconstruction of schools damaged by storms in the province in the new financial year commencing on 1 April 2011.
In announcing the intervention during her State of the Province Address delivered on Friday in the Provincial legislature, Premier Thandi Modise said that her administration has identified schools that require urgent renovations and more financial resources.
Key priorities outlined for implementation by Premier Modise include eradication of all mud schools, provision of decent shelter for all learners, ridding schools of gangsterism and drugs, provision of learner transport as well as ensuring that schools nutrition programmes are run efficiently.
"Since education is the foundation on which every society’s development is built, we must do our utmost to create a good learning and teaching environment at all our schools," Modise said.
She also acknowledged the public-private partnership involving the provincial government, Impala Platinum, Pretoria Portland Cement and African Rainbow Minerals towards building and renovating several schools in our province and called for more involvement from the private and business sectors.
