North West scholar patrol registration and training in full swing

The tragic road accident in which a Grade One learner died and Onalerona Radebe landed in hospital with injuries after attempting to pull her from being knocked by a construction bakkie, has not intimidated and or discouraged scholar patrol heroine Onalenna Radebe from continuing with her passion for road safety. The 12 year old Grade six learner from Seetsele Primary School in Magogoe Koi-Koi village outside Mahikeng is among learners who have registered for participation in this year’s scholar patrol programme.

Registration, training of new scholar patrollers, distribution of new equipment and uniform are underway across schools in the North West province until the cut-off date of 31 March 2011, Acting MEC for Human Settlements, Safety & Liaison, Dr. Magome Masike said on Wednesday.

The scholar patrol programme is aimed at creating road safety awareness among learners, ensuring safe crossing during school peak hours and to instill an attitude of safe crossing among learners and the general motorists.

About 3 825 learners from 327 schools in the province have already participated in the annual Road Safety Scholar Patrol programme. North West Road Safety authorities are targeting an increase in the number of schools participating in the programme for the 2011/12 financial year to reduce road accidents and fatalities involving learners.

Distribution of scholar patrol uniforms and equipment is underway and targeted for simultaneous completion with the closing of the registration process.
