North West road traffic management discontinues 41 public transport vehicles

Forty-one unroadworthy public transport vehicles, 31 minibuses and 9 busses were discontinued across the North West province as Provincial Road traffic Management authorities intensified special public transport enforcement operations over the past two days.

The discontinued vehicles were among the over 3 300 vehicles that were stopped and checked for vehicle fitness, driver fitness, loads management and documentation. Nine roads users were arrested for driving public transport without public driving permits when 1 815 public vehicles and 1 507 freight vehicles were stopped. On the second day of the operation, a driver was also arrested for driving a discontinued vehicle.

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono says that 408 motorists were issued with notices for various defects on their vehicles that include among others worn out tyres, dysfunctional brakes, not being in possession of fire extinguishers etc.

The country-wide zero tolerance special operations as ordered by the Minister of Transport, Dr Sibusiso Ndebele are in response to the high spate of crashes involving public passenger transport vehicles and in support of the Special National Public Transport Enforcement Plan.

The plan is in support of the National Rolling Enforcement Plan and the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety.
