Road users from around Taung including public transport stakeholders are expected to participate in 10 kilometre walk for safer roads organised by the North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison on Thursday. The march is to be followed by a stray animals campaign road show around villages in the Greater Taung Local Municipality on Friday.
The activities are part of a campaign outreach programme aimed reducing accidents and fatalities on public roads during the festive season.
The march on Thursday is expected to depart from the Taung Provincial Traffic Offices at 8:00 am and proceed to the Taung Central Business District in front of the Greater Taung Local Municipality Administration Office. A road safety campaign truck will then proceed to Mogopela, Matlhako 1 and then to Matlhako 2 villages.
On Friday, the campaign truck to conscientise villagers about measures to prevent accidents involving livestock will go around villages of Matsheng, Manthe, Vaaltyn, Qho, Mokgareng, Matlapaneng, Choseng and Dryharts which were identified as hazardous as far as stray animal’s accidents are concerned.
Arm-band reflectors, animal reflective belts and reflective ear rings will be distributed pedestrians and to farmers during the campaign outreach.
MEC Desbo Mohono is confident that the outreach campaign will contribute towards reducing road accidents involving stray animals in the Greater Taung area.
Mohono calls on road users in the area to be covered by the campaign drive to use the opportunity by signing the pledge to make roads safe by promoting responsible driving, no drinking and driving, no over speeding and no over loading.
The outreach campaign is supported by Batlhaping Baga Phuduhuchwana, Ba-ga Mothibi and Ba-ga Maidi traditional authorities, Greater Taung Local Municipality, the Road Accident Fund, Bophirima Taxi Council, churches, the South African Police Service and North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
