North West Rental Housing Tribunal outreach awareness campaign targets more communities

The North West Rental Housing Tribunal’s province-wide outreach programme was extended to Ventersdorp earlier this week as the campaign entered its second week. The programme proceeds to Wolmaranstadt and Leeuwdoringstadt in Maquassi Hills Local Municipalityon Wednesday.

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Desbo Mohono had in announcing the outreach programme outlined that the objective of the outreach awareness campaign which started last week in Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp and Orkney was to enlighten the public throughout the province about the nature, power, services and operations of the rental housing tribunal.

The key operations of the Rental Housing Act 50, of 1999 which establishes the Rental Housing Tribunal for it to serve its regulatory function empowers it to deal with issues that relate to non refund of deposit, non-payment of rents, leases that are not in compliance with the law, lock-out and evictions without a court order.

The act covers any house, hostel room, hut, shack, flat , apartment, room, outbuilding, garage or similar structure which is leased, as well as any store room, outbuilding, and garage or demarcated parking space which is leased as part of the lease. The act does not cover commercial tenancies.

The campaign whose focus on Friday will be at reaching people at strategic points such as shopping malls/complexes, taxi ranks, hostels, libraries, magistrates courts in Zeerust, Lehurutshe and Welbedachtis scheduled to run throughout the June month and into July month.
