The North West province recorded a decrease of 20 fatal crashes which translated into a 21,9% reduction in road deaths during the December festive season, Provincial MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono declared in announcing preliminary statistics for the December Festive Season Arrive Alive Campaign on Friday.
MEC Mohono ascribed the resounding success of decreasing road fatalities from 91 in December 2010 to 73 in 2011 to the festive season strategy that the province had opted for to increase visibility of law enforcement officers during night time on a 24 hour basis.
Fifty drunk drivers were arrested and more than 19000 summonses were issued for various traffic infringements during the festive season operations during the December month.
“The onslaught against lawlessness on public roads should be sustained as part of our efforts to intensify implementation of the 2011-2022 Decade of Action for Road Safety programme,” stressed Mohono.
The MEC expressed appreciation to all members of the North West Provincial Road Traffic Management Unit, South African Police Service, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Health personnel and others who played a supporting function for their individual and collective sacrifices and contribution towards attainment of the objective to safe lives.
Zero tolerance traffic law enforcement operations that focused on driver fitness, vehicle fitness, moving violations, drunken driving and speed law enforcement were conducted throughout the festive season until Wednesday this week.
