North West pupils swept by flooding river

Two primary school learners were swept by strong currents while crossing a flooding river in Moruleng near Sun City in the North West province on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred at around 07h00 at Manamakgotheng village while the pupils were crossing Makgawe river on route to school. Rescue teams are at the scene searching for the pair.

Thirteen learners were earlier rescued out of a minibus combi by Moses Kotane Local Municipality Fire & Emergency Services after the vehicle they were travelling in from Mogwase Correctional Services Centre to Holy Family Combined School in Mogwase was swept by floods at Mabele-a-Podi village.

In another incident in the same area, a father managed to pull his two children out of a Ford Icon vehicle that was submerged in the water after the vehicle was swept by floods.

North West Road Traffic Management authorities wish to advise motorists travelling between Mogwase and Moruleng to use the R510 Thabazimbi-Northam road as the D533 Mogwase-Moruleng road is temporary closed as the Kgama bridge is flooding due to heavy rains experienced in the area.
