Department of Public Works and Roads commemorates Youth Month with participants of the National Youth Service Programme (NYSP)
Potchefstroom - The Department of Public Works and Roads celebrated Youth Month with over 300 participants of the National Youth Service Programme (NYSP). Participants are enrolled in brick laying, plumbing and road workers aid skills development programmes; and will be issued with certificates at the end of the programme.
The celebration comes a day ahead of the official commemoration of the 47th Anniversary of Youth Month under the theme “Accelerating Youth Economic Participation for a Sustainable Future”.
MEC for Public Works and Roads, Gaoage Oageng Molapisi led the Departmental celebrations accompanied by the MMC responsible for Special Programmes at Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, Cllr Mpho Matsopola and MMC for Infrastructure in the JB Marks Local Municipality, Cllr Gabriel Modise.
According to the MEC, out of the 971 participants of the NYS programme “Young people constitute 826, that translates to 85%; and a total 568 are women, which constitutes 59%”.
Participants received presentations on economic development opportunities and skills development from various institutions, including the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, National Youth Development Agency (NYDA)as well as Vusulela TVET College.
“The NYS programme is one of the priority programmes that the Department will look at closely in an effort to increase access, especially to young people living with disabilities to skills development. “As we celebrate Youth Month , we reiterate our commitment to removing all barriers of entry to employment and shall double our efforts to ensure the programme leads to meaning youth empowerment, ” concluded Molapisi.
