In an effort to build capacity and improve functionality for Community Policing Forums (CPFs) for an intensified war against crime, the North West Department of Public Safety began with its induction programme for CPF Executive Committee Members in Ngaka Modiri Molema District on Monday. The induction workshop held at the Embassy Hall in Mafikeng was attended by chairpersons, secretaries and treasurers of CPF’s and cluster boards.
The one day induction workshops which are being rolled out throughout the province focus on administration functioning and financial matters. Key issue covered by the workshop include among others:
* Objectives and responsibilities of CPF’s
* Meeting procedures
* Application for funding
* Compliance to approved business plans and Memorandum of Agreement conditions
* Recurring audit queries and unauthorised rollover of funds
* Compliance to legislative framework (Public Finance Management Act and Treasury Regulations).
Oupa Thutlwa, CPF Secretary for Zeerust CPF described the workshop as enlightening as it addressed issues of role definition and accountability.
“We are empowered to focus on taking the war against crime to criminals and not entertain squabbles within our structures as this serves to derail our cause,” he added.
The workshop for Dr Kenneth Kaunda District is to be held on Wednesday at Klerksdorp Recreational Hall, while the one for Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District is to be held this Friday at Vyburg International Hotel.
The last induction workshop for Bojanala Platinum District will be conducted next week Monday at Rustenburg Civic Centre.
The induction workshops follow the provincial consultative workshop that MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa held with CPF in Mafikeng last Wednesday. The need for a capacity building programme for CPF and clarity on funding of business plans for crime prevention projects were among some of the issues that the CPF’s had raised with MEC Yawa.
