North West Public Safety authorities warns public to return toxic salt after train derailed

A passenger good train derailed near Mahikeng Railway Station in the North West Province on Monday afternoon spilling salt that is said to be toxic.

The train is alleged to have derailed at around 15h30.

Locals rushed to the scene to gather the salt, some in bakkies unaware that that it is poisonous and not safe for human consumption.

The Department and police wish to warn those who gathered the salt not to use it but to return it immediately as its consumption might have devastating consequences.
