The North West Provincial Government has welcomed the unconditional reemployment of about 17 000 striking mineworkers as a progressive development that will allow normality to return to the volatile area of Freedom Park outside Rustenburg in the North West Province.
The settlement agreement between National Union of Mineworkers and Impala Platinum was reached on Thursday afternoon after a marathon meeting that was held at Impala South facilitated by Congress of South African Trade Unions General Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi.
North West Premier Mme Thandi Modise was briefed on the outcome of the meeting by MEC for Finance Louisa Mabe who together with Executive Mayor of Rustenburg, Councillor Mpho Khunou represented the provincial and local government in the meeting.
MEC Mabe has expressed optimism that workers would return back to work as from Friday to allow further engagements to address concerns of workers to resume.
