As access to housing is increasingly considered as access to wealth, given the economic security aspect of property ownership, the North West provincial government is committed to providing 14 000 houses for the 2010/11 financial year.
The commitment was made by the North West Premier, Maureen Modiselle, during the State of the Province Address. Addressing the packed provincial legislature, Modiselle said the provincial government would provide houses to the most needy of its communities to improve the lives of people.
In achieving the said commitment, Premier Modiselle, said the province would accredit deserving municipality in terms of the accreditation framework.
“In order to accelerate the delivery of houses in terms of outcome eight of the national monitoring framework, we are going to accredit deserving municipalities in terms of the accreditation framework,” said Modiselle.
Thus far, the provincial government has provided 11 000 low cost houses to the most destitute families. In its generic goal to provide sustainable human settlements that improve quality of life, the provincial government encourages people to be at the centre of everything meaning that beneficiaries must be active participants in the provision of human settlements.
