North West Premier Thandi Modise's Christmas and New Year message

The year 2013 will forever remain memorable for it took us to depths of sorrow we had never experienced as a nation. We had to reach deep within us to remain on course in our quest to extend freedoms and opportunities to all of our people, to overcome new challenges that have emerged and face the future with confidence.

When despair knocked on our door with the loss of the greatest freedom fighter, world icon and founding father of our nation, former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, we remembered from the lessons we have learnt from none other than the colossal Madiba himself that our long walk to freedom had been higher than hope and that despite temporary setbacks, great victories still lie ahead for our people.

The significant progress, achievements and milestones for which we received accolades from the African Diaspora and the country in the past year have given practical expression to our determination and effort to lift the burden of poverty, unemployment and inequality from the shoulder of our people.

The deplorable incidents of gender based violence we continue to experience even during this season of kindness and call on all of us to unite in action and to intensify our collective effort in support of the Million Signature Anti-rape campaign to expose perpetrators to eradicate the scourge of rape and abuse.

As we celebrate Christmas and recharge for the tasks that still lie ahead of us in the new year, we call on all of our people to remember that this season of peace, goodwill and sharing also presents us with an opportunity to expand our giving encompassing the lonely and needy. We should celebrate it by giving the light of hope and love to those who need them most, our orphans, widows and our elderly.

As we celebrate the end of a productive year and recharge for what will undoubtedly be a hectic year, let do so responsibly mindful that more advances still lie ahead for us to score and celebrate as part of our legacy, history and rich heritage.

Let us enjoy the festivities responsibly and support our men and women in dignified blue by reporting suspected criminal activities, women, child abuse and neglect.

Working together we can do more to advance Madiba’s legacy of selfless service, humility, unity, reconciliation, nation building, deepen our democracy and sustain our hard won freedom.

As the Madiba himself said, “A bright future beckons. The onus is on us, through hard work, honesty and integrity, to reach for the stars.”
As our province prepares to celebrate twenty years of freedom, we wish to thanks every one of you for helping to make this accomplishment a success!

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year during which we will together in our diversity raise our banners to rejoice the second decade of our freedom and democracy.
