North West Premier Thandi Modise commits continued support for institutions of traditional leadership

The North West Provincial government will continue to play a defined role in supporting the institution of traditional leadership to deal with the resolution of conflicts and issues of succession,” North West Premier Thandi Modise has assured communities.

Speaking during her State of the Province Address delivered in the provincial legislature on Friday, Premier Modise said that her province which is predominately rural has a significant number of communities that are under traditional leaders.

“Though leadership disputes have arisen in some communities as a result of succession, land and mineral resources, we are geared towards ensuring stability and good governance in traditional councils by dealing with challenges facing institutions of traditional leadership,” the Premier emphasised.

Modise reported that lodged disputes are being handled by the Commission for Disputes to bring about speedy resolution and stability and that public hearings are also being conducted in a number of communities as part of the dispute resolution process.

She highlighted that the Independent Electoral Commission would be responsible for overseeing and conducting election of new traditional councils as the term of office of the current traditional councils expired late last year.
