North West Premier Thandi Modise appeals for prayers for unity, reconciliation, social cohesion and peaceful elections during Easter Services

North West Premier Thandi Modise has appealed to believers to pray for unity, reconciliation, social cohesion, peaceful elections on 7 May 2014 and for a settlement to be reached to end to the protracted strike in the platinum belt during their Easter gatherings.

“The senseless violence, acts of intimidation of non-striking workers associated with the protracted strike in the platinum belt, destruction of private and public properties during violent protests and incidents of gender based violence we have experienced calls for us to unite in fervent prayer in our homes and wherever we will in fellowship,” Premier Modise said.

“The intercessions of our faith communities have carried us over the past 20 years of our freedom and democracy. We count of the partnership we have deepened with the Provincial Chapter of the National Interfaith Council of South Africa to take our province forward for it to contribute towards nation building and promoting Ubuntu,” Modise stressed.

“The triple challenge of unemployment, poverty and inequality, greed, corruption, conflicts on the continent and in our communities, violent crimes which are robbing families and communities of their loved ones, our economy and our young people who are our future should be high-up on prayer lists. As religious leaders amplify the need for tolerance and unity in diversity for us to carry forward the legacy of Madiba, believers should remember those who are mourning the loss of their loved ones and also pray for the speedy recovery of those who are in hospital,” said Premier Modise.

In wishing those that will be driving to various destinations a safe travel and urging communities to be vigilant against opportunistic crime, Premier Modise said that the Easter Arrive Alive/Duty Calls law enforcement operations will only be successful if there is cooperation and everyone plays their part against lawlessness.

Modise called on communities to report suspected criminal activities and for parents not to leave their children alone. She urged motorists not to drink and drive, to observe safe following distance in the wet weather and to rest after two hours of driving.
