Non-consultation of stakeholders in determining policing and crime hotspots undermines democratic accountable policing that communities are yearning for and should make way for strengthened partnerships if the war against crime is to be won, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono said on Tuesday.
The 2010/2011 Service Delivery Provincial Monitoring and Oversight reports for the South African Police Service has revealed that Koster was the only police station among the 76 police stations in the North West Province to have involved stakeholders in determining its policing priorities.
In commending the management of Koster Police Station, MEC Mohono said that recommendation for policing priorities be determined in compliance with Section 18(1)(e) of the South African Police Service(SAPS) Act 68 of 1995 and section 23 of the Municipal Act 32 of 2000 should be prioritised by police management at all levels.
MEC Mohono's department has also urged SAPS to also expedite installation of 10111(emergency telephone lines) at Madibogo, Stella, Setlagole, Cyfeskuil, Makapanstad, Jericho, Mmakau, Mothotlung, Makwassie, Mogwase, Nietverdien, Huhudi, Zeerust, Lethabong, Boitekong, Swartruggens, Tshidilamolomo and Makgobistadt, whilst the lines at Tlhabane Police Stations should be attended to be fully functional.
