North West Operation Futha nets 48 for drunken driving

Forty-eight motorists were arrested for drunken driving during intensified zero tolerance traffic law enforcement operations across the North West province over the past weekend.

Twenty-three of the motorists were arrested in the Potchefstroom/Klerksdorp area, 16 around the Brits/Bapong area, six around Mahikeng, two in Vryburg and while one was arrested in Rustenburg area. They were all expected to appear at various courts to answer to charges of drunken driving.

The provincial road traffic authorities embarked on the special operation dubbed Operation Futha targeted at drunken drivers, speed and drag racing as part of its Make Road Safe/Arrive Alive Festive Season Campaign in order to reduce accidents and fatalities on public roads.

The operations in support of the national rolling enforcement plan are to be intensified across the province towards and throughout the festive season.
