The North West Provincial Road Safety debate team beat Limpopo in the semi-finals of the National Road Safety Debate, that started on Tuesday in Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. The five-member team from Mafikeng High School, will lock horns with Gauteng Province in the finals on Wednesday.
“South Africa will reduce fatalities by 50% by the year 2020 as per the Decade of Action on Road Safety” is the debate topic by the finalists of the prestigious annual championships.
Western Cape and Northern Cape were eliminated in the 1st phase towards the semi-finals, while the host province, KwaZulu-Natal was eliminated by Limpopo. Gauteng beat Mpumalanga in the semi-finals to qualify for the finals. Only seven provinces participated in the Championships as Free State and Eastern Cape did not participate.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono, who had earlier encouraged the North West team to reclaim the province’s “road safety champion’s status” by giving their outmost performance competition, phoned the team coach on Tuesday evening to spur the team to “snatch the gold from Gauteng in the finals and bring it to the Platinum Province, the home of road safety”.
The North West team follows in the footsteps of the provincial team that won the esteemed championship in 2009.
