North West MEC Mohono condemns racist graffiti

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Mme Desbo Mohono on Tuesday condemned in the strongest terms defacing of road traffic signs with inflammatory and racist graffiti.

A proliferation of detestable graffiti was observed by Provincial Road Traffic Management authorities along the R505 Lichtenburg-Ottosdal road over the past few weeks. The scrawling painted black in Afrikaans on several road traffic signs reads “. ANC se Mxer se gxt. Kxffer Malema”

MEC Mohono has urged members of the public not to be provoked into anger but to instead assist police with information that will assist them in their investigations to track down those who seek to polarise and heighten racial tension within farming communities.

Painting graffiti on road traffic signs is in violation of Section 57, subsection 12 of the Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996which states that,“ No person shall wilfully and negligently damage any road traffic sign or any other sign, signal, marking or other device displayed or without proper authorisation remove it, or alter the position thereof.”

Any person arrested and convicted for the offense in terms of the act shall be liable for a fine or imprisonment for a period not exceeding six years.
