North West Local Government on hosting disaster awareness programme

Learners in Mathateng and Dingateng get educated on dealing with disaster incidents

Department of Local Government and Human Settlements in Bokone Bophirma through Provincial Disaster Management Centre embarked on a two day disaster awareness programme at Dingateng and Mathateng villages near Mahikeng last week.

The workshop which was held in partnership with Ratlou local municipality, Department of Social Development, Education and Sport Development and South African Police Service (SAPS), was intended to increase the learners’ knowledge in dealing with hazardous incidents such as fire, floods. The learners were also warned to guard against leaving burning candles etc. unattended.

MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements, Galaletsang Gaolaolwe said the department has a responsibility to provide systems and structures for disaster risk management across the province to with the view of ensuring safe and disaster resilient communities.

“We are very pleased to be a part of this noteworthy partnership with schools since we are advocates of disaster preparedness, the important thing is to be ready and to know what to do. This will help minimize the impact of calamities to communities most at risk”, said Captain Yvonne Maqhoboza from SAPS.

“We have been working in all four districts to make schools and communities’ fire, earthquake and floods safe. We also aim to provide proper education on natural disasters, evacuation plans as well as conduct mock drill training to children in other areas”, said Nimrod Bahetane from fire and rescue services in Ratlou local municipality.
