NCOP Select Committee on Social Services sold on Marikana housing project
The Select Committee on Social Services has nothing but praises for the Department of Local Government and Human Settlements in Bokone Bophirima for successfully implementing the Marikana housing project which is part of government’s initiative to revitalise old mining town on and to bringing dignity to the people living in mining areas.
Members of the Committee unanimously conceded that the almost completed 292 Breaking New Ground Housing (BNG) and 252 Community residential units (CRU) are of first-class quality. Leading a delegation to the project yesterday as part of their oversight responsibility to assess progress on the revitalisation of old mining towns, Chairperson of the Committee, Cathy Dlamini said the province had set a good example of what the revitalisation of old mining town should look like and called on other provinces that have mining towns, to follow suit. “This type of good work should be duplicated in other provinces”, she said and further urged the Rustenburg local municipality to allocate the housing units according to beneficiary list.
The Department of Local Government and Human Settlements is currently building 200 housing units in Marikana Extension 2 on the 50 hectares of land donated by Lonmin. The units will be spread amongst the four housing programmes namely Breaking New Ground (BNG), Community Residential Units (CRU), Social Housing and Financially Linked Individual Subsidy Programme (FLISP) in order to develop an integrated and sustainable settlement whilst addressing the huge housing backlog in the greater Marikana area.
The CRU project is done by woman and youth contractors, respectively.
