North West Legislature urges Public Works to compelte roads construction

Public Works Portfolio Committee urges department to finish roads construction in Kagisano-Molopo as O re Bone re go Bone continues

On 23 June 2015, the North West Provincial Legislature held O re bone, re go bone – Taking Parliament to the People in Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality at Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality under the theme “The people shall govern through strengthening public participation, promoting accountability and transparency in government”.

The “O re bone re go bone” which literally means “You see us and we see you”, is a programme aimed at taking legislature to the people to strengthen oversight and public participation and to promote accountability and transparency in government.

During the campaign, Members of the Legislature will also interact with Mayors, members of the Municipal Public Accounts Committees, ward committees, traditional authorities, farmers and their respective organisations, organised structures and members of the public on issues affecting them.

The Portfolio Committee on Public Works, Roads, Transport and Community Safety went on an oversight visit to assess work done on the construction of Ganyesa to Madinonyane; Morokweng to Bona-Bona and Morokweng to Vostershoop roads.

When the Committee arrived at a site office of Liviero Civils that is contracted to upgrade Road D3495 from Morokweng to Bona-Bona valued at over R160 million, the site was abandoned and construction stopped. An official on site informed the Committee that the construction was allegedly stopped in March 2015 but employees were still paid their monthly wages and the company regularly holds consultative meetings with employees who reside in local villages.

Committee Chairperson, Hon. Jeannette Dibetso-Nyathi said the Department of Public Works and Roads must inform the committee about the progress on the project before the suspension of the road.  The Department has to ensure that there is enough financial resources to finish construction of these roads as it compromises service delivery.

“The Committee urges the Premier to assist the department in ensuring that the roads are finished as they create jobs and provide relevant skills for local people. When construction is stopped, poverty is escalated in the affected villages, and these projects are means for the communities to survive during the time the project is in existence” said Hon. Dibetso-Nyathi.
