The North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Public Works happy with progress on construction of roads in the province
The North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Public Works, Roads and Transport is happy with the level of improvement shown by the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport on addressing the issues concerning construction of roads in the province.
The Committee had called the department to give a progress report about the construction of the following roads; Mmamutla road; Wolmaranstad/Schweizer-Reneke road; Lichtenburg/Koster Road; Bona Bona road; Madinonyane road; Vostershoop road and Tosca road.
Responding to the question on whether the Lichtenburg/Koster road is classified as a Capex road or under maintenance, the Head of Department, Mr. Makgothi Thobakgale said the road was initially funded under the Provincial Road Maintenance Grant. He said after the court ordered the department to correct the tender for the road, a term contractor was appointed for the rehabilitation and maintenance and is currently on site.
“R10 million has been set aside to complete the remaining work on the 52 kilometre road. The remaining work consists of 2.4 kilometre stretch and base repairs, reseal, road marking and signage. All these will be completed by the end of April 2014.
“The other project is the Wolmaranstad/Schweizer-Reneke road which is currently 56% complete and is budgeted for R260 million. The road from Mammutla to Kgomotso will be completed before the end of the year,” said Mr. Thobakgale.
He said status of other projects is that the contractors are either on site or are on the tender evaluation or adjudication phases.
Chairperson of the Committee, Hon. Hoffman Galeng said the Committee acknowledges challenges like the recent floods which affected certain projects and hope the department would extend the contracts in these projects.
“The department must also urgently assist areas where floods have damaged roads,” said Hon. Galeng.
The Committee also requested the department to give detailed reports on the construction of other roads, legal cases against the department and complaints about the appointments in the Extended Public Works Programme.
