On Tuesday, 28 April 2015, the North West Provincial Legislature’s Sitting has adopted a House Resolution for the North West province name change.
This follows a notice of motion tabled by Hon. Gordon Kegakilwe (ANC) in the Legislature Sitting on the 21 April 2015 for a debate on the North West province name change. The motion was then debated on the House Sitting on 23 April 2015 where the Speaker of the Legislature, Hon. Sussana Dantjie deferred the adoption of the resolution to the next sitting of 28 April 2015.
During the House Sitting of 28 April 2015, Hon. Kegakilwe moved for the adoption of the resolution on the name change and was seconded by Hon. Motlalepula Rosho(ANC) however, Hon. Chris Hattingh (DA) stood on a point of order against the adoption of the resolution and the matter was decided by a vote through a secret ballot system. For the resolution to be adopted as a house resolution, it required 2/3 majority of members in support of the adoption of name change as per Section 104 (2) of Chapter 6 of the Constitution; twenty-two (22) members voted in support of the adoption of the resolution whilst five (5) voted against such adoption.
The Speaker announced that the House Resolution will be sent to the Parliament for further processing and engagements. Further processes would include the matter being referred to a committee that would start the public participation processes and may ultimately lead to the amendment of the Constitution to reflect the new name of the province.
