North West learners to evaluate impact of road safety campaigns

Learners from high schools across the North West province are to evaluate whether the South African Road Safety Campaigns are making a positive impact on reducing the high rate of road crashes in the country. The appraisal session to be held in the form of a debating session to be held as from 9h00 on Friday 24 June 2011 at the Protea Hotel in Mafikeng.

North West MEC Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono says the participation of learners in road safety debate is crucial because young people have a role to play in advocating and networking with their peers on the five pillars of the Global Plan on Road Safety which focus on road safety management, safer roads, safer vehicles, safer road users and improved crash response.

The annual road safety debate competition is aimed at encouraging learners to be aware of road safety issues, teach learners to take responsibility for road safety issues that affect their communities, develop and enhance learner’s presentation, communication and listening skills.

The debating teams would be battling for the provincial road safety debate championship after successfully defeating their peers at district level. The Rustenburg based Fields College representing Bojanala Platinum District is to face Mafikeng High School from the Ngaka Modiri District in the elimination rounds, whilst Potchefstroom Secondary from Dr Keneth Kaunda will face Pudimoe High School from Dr Ruth Mompati District Municipality.

Members of the media are invited to be part of the prestigious event that celebrates the contribution of youth in the development of the country as part of the programme for youth month.

The Road Safety Debate Programme is one of the flagship projects of the Road Traffic Management Corporation coordinated by the Road Safety Directorate of the Public Safety Branch of the department in partnership with the Department of Basic Education.
