In an effort to reduce pedestrian fatalities on public roads and instil a culture of safe road usage, the North West Department of Public Safety, winners of the 2009 National Road Safety Debate are in the next week expected to finalise their road safety debate district eliminations for high schools learners.
The eliminations that started at sub-district level are in preparation for the fourth provincial Road Safety Debate competition to be held in two weeks time.
North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa has outlined the objectives of the Road Safety Schools debate programme that involves grade 9, 10 and 11 learners from rural and urban areas as to:
- encourage learners to be aware of road safety issues or challenges
- empower learners with practical research skills
- teach learners to take responsibilities of road safety challenges that affect their communities
- develop and enhance the learner's presentation skills by means of practical presentation sessions
- promote team work and participatory learning by means of practical education techniques(PET)
Ngaka Modiri Molema district (2009 provincial and national winners of the competition) are to hold their eliminations on Wednesday, 4 August 2010 at Zeerust Combined School.
Dr Kenneth Kaunda district is to hold theirs on Friday, 6 August at Tlhatlhelelo Training Centre in Jouberton. While Bojanala Platinum district are to hold theirs on Wednesday, 11 August at Brits Central Secondary School, those for Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district are to be held on Monday, 16 August 2010 at Vryburg Secondary School.
The Road Safety Debate programme is one of the flagships of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (TRMC) implemented annually by all nine provinces.
In the North West, the programme is this year sponsored by, among others, the Road Traffic Management Corporation, British Petroleum South Africa (BPSA), Bakwena Toll, Magalieswater, Rustenburg Platinum Mine and North West FM.
