North West learner dies after being knocked down by car

A seven year-old Grade R pupil, Boitshepo Khachane died after he was knocked down by a car on the Seweding-Mahikeng Airport road on the outskirts on Mmabatho in the North West Province on Wednesday morning.

It is alleged that a speeding Hyundai sedan driven by a 36 year old male driver hit the boy from Mocoseng village who was crossing the busy tarred road together with two of his schoolmates. The trio were on their way to EP Lekhela Primary School in Mmabatho Unit 9 extension. The boy died on the side road of the scene of the accident where he landed.

The driver of the vehicle who was with a passenger purportedly tried to flee the scene of the accident but was stopped a distance from the scene by another motorist. The accident occurred a few metres from and between Nkomo General Dealer and Archie Bottle Store at around 7:30 am.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide, negligent and or reckless driving.

In conveying condolences to the family Khachane family on the loss of their child, North West Acting MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Dr Magome Masike appealed to motorists to drive with caution and to be on the look- out for pedestrians particularly during rush hours.

MEC Masike appeals to learners to cross at pedestrian crossings with scholar patrol road safety teams on duty whenever they are going or returning from school during rush hours.
