North West job creation initiatives recognised and rewarded

North West has received more than R62 million in a form of an Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) incentive grant and scooped awards for Best National Youth Service (NYS) Projects (infrastructure) and Early Childhood Development Programme.

The whooping incentive grant and two awards were given during the annual Kamoso Awards ceremony arranged by the national department of Public Works in Krugersdorp on Monday (this week).

The social sector of in the province the received R42 million while municipalities received R17,1 million.

Kamoso Awards was launched in 2007 to recognise public bodies and non-state organisations that have excelled in implementing the EPWP, with special focus on infrastructure, social, environment and culture.

The infrastructure was driven by the department of Public Works, Roads and Transport while the winning Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme was done by the Department of Education.

Job creation through EPWP’s contribution especially among the youth, women, and people with disabilities is a critical area.

"We are indeed very encouraged that our effort to drive this important programme is being recognised at national level. There will always be challenges but we must pull all stop create more and more job opportunities at any given time,"said provincial MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Mahlakeng Mahlakeng.

He said the recognition of his department in a form on an award and cash injection of R42 million for the social sector, was an "ideal launch pad’’ for the department to work towards doubling the number of opportunities particularly in rural areas.
