North West intensifies law enforcement ahead of new year festivities

Fifty-nine motorists were issued with traffic fines for road offences at multipurpose roadblocks conducted around the Brits area in the North West Province on Friday.

Six hundred and thirty-seven vehicles were stopped and screened at the three roadblocks conducted by the North West Provincial Road Traffic Management, South African Police Service and Home Affairs Immigration Branch on the Brits-Letlhabile road, Brits-Thabazimbi and Broederstroom-Lanseria road.

Three people were arrested for smoking dagga during a stop and search operation in Letlhabile while the other was arrested for possession of dagga at the Broederstroom-Lanseria road. An unroadworthy Nissan bakkie vehicle was discontinued and 10 illegal immigrants arrested.

Meanwhile, two men were arrested during blitz operation that focused on drunken driving on Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday. The motorists aged 34 and 36 were taken to Brits Provincial Hospital for blood sample extractions after breathaliser tests confirmed that they were intoxicated.

The pair was locked up at the Brits Police Station and is expected to appear in court soon.
