North West intensifies efforts to combat violent and serious crimes

The establishment of three more highly trained tactical response police units should intensify the onslaught against criminals involved in armed robberies, other violent and serious crimes in the North West province, Provincial MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono said on Wednesday.

The three units to be deployed in Brits, Klerksdorp and Mahikeng will bring the number of tactical response police units in the province to four as one was established and deployed in Rustenburg prior the 2010 Football World Cup.

MEC Mohono was earlier this week briefed on the establishment of the units including that of a crack team to arrest wanted suspects by Provincial South African Police Service (SAPS) Senior Management led by Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Zukiswa Mbombo during her meeting with Peace Justice Crime Prevention and Safety Cluster departments.

On case management, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development in the province reported that its Saturday courts were handling an average of 15 cases a day in an effort to reduce case backlog. This has been achieved through increased mediation by prosecutors.
