Women contractors scoop Govan Mbeki Housing Awards
Two women developers yesterday scooped at least four awards each at the Bokone Bophirima Govan Mbeki Housing Awards which were held in Delareyville.
Palesa Manch of Sun Success Construction Projects won the best established woman contractor and best rural housing project whilst Teresa Makgaka of Blue Flame Properties 37 walked away with the best informal settlement upgrading project and the best emerging woman contractor awards, respectively. Toro ya Afrika won the best community residential units in Mogwase.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, the MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements, Galaletsang Gaolaolwe said the awards we held recognise good performance in housing delivery. ‘These awards are also held in honour of one of our stalwarts, Govan Mbeki who not only distinguished himself as a scholar, a disciplined cadre, a builder and a teacher who had a vision on the preservation of human dignity and provision of human settlements for all’", she said.
MEC Gaolaolwe also warned developers against building shoddy houses or those that take long to complete the projects. “‘We will not hesitate to terminate contracts of those who fail us, and if needs be, we will have them blacklisted. Our housing delivery agenda continues, unabated. We have resolved to closely monitor the delivery schedules of contractors on daily basis to improve performance and conduct physical verification, if needs be’’, she said.
Winners will compete with other provinces at the national Govan Mbeki Housing Awards to be held at Gallagher Estate, Midrand on 09 November 2017.
