North West Human Settlements on Nelson Mandela International Day

Housing developers in Bokone Bophirima plough back to their communities on Nelson Mandela International Day

When Gloria Mokgothu’s shack in Klerksdorp’s Extension 12 (Jouberton) got destroyed twice by fire in 2012, she had to face the daunting task of rebuilding her home - a shack, from the debris.

Little did she know that few years later, she would be a proud owner of a fully furnished five room house which consists of two bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen and bathroom with a toilet. Mokgothu (55) who is a mother of four, shares the house with her ill husband, Kenneth (54) whose old age grant is the family’s only source of income.

The house was donated yesterday on Nelson Mandela International Day by Masikhule Projects as they joined in the rest of the world and heeded the clarion call for people to recognise their individual power to make an imprint by changing the lives ordinary people, as in the case of Mokgothu’s family.

An elated Mokgothu said her family no longer has to run for cover during windy and rainy seasons. “I have nothing but praises for Masikhule Projects for what they have done for me and my family and I wish them success in their business venture”, she said.

MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements, Collen Maine appealed to other business people to also join hands with government in changing the lives of disadvantaged communities. “Government alone cannot reach out to each and every citizen.

Those who are more fortunate must appreciate what they already have and plough back to their communities”, he said. The Chief Operating Officer of Masikhule Projects, Major Nguphane encouraged other business people to invest in changing the lives of their communities. “If each one of us can help at least one person or one family, we can definitely make a huge difference in improving the quality of life of our people’’, he said.

Meanwhile, other several housing developers across the province have pledged to donate 29 houses to needy and destitute families throughout Bokone Bophirima as part of commemorating Nelson Mandela International Day. Speaking to some of the families in Taung on Friday, MEC Maine said the department had through ward councillors, identified families living in awful conditions, especially where there are elderly and disabled persons.

The United Nations declared July 2009, Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of Madiba’s contribution to global peace and freedom whilst the 67 minutes symbolises the 67 years on uninterrupted and selfless service by him (Madiba) to the people of South Africa. This year’s message is: “Take Action - Inspire
