Six road users died and one was seriously injured in a head on collision involving an SUV and a sedan on the N12 between Wolmaranstad and Klerksdorp in the North West province on Saturday night.
The tragic crash reportedly occurred at around 7h00 pm about 30 kilometers outside Wolmaranstad near Bona Bona Lodge. It is alleged that a sedan with four occupants which was from Wolmaranstad towards Klerksdorp caught on fire on impact and all occupants in the vehicle were burned to ashes.
The driver of the GWM SUV and a passenger (both males) were also killed on impact. Rescue teams had to use jaws of life to free their bodies from the wreckage while a male passenger estimated to be in his 30s was rushed to Nick Bodenstein Provincial Hospital in Wolmaranstad with serious injuries. The SUV was supposedly from Klerksdorp on route towards Wolmaranstad.
The N12 was partially closed for over five hourswhile provincial road traffic management officers controlled traffic as police and accident experts tried to gather evidence to figure out what could have caused the accident ,cleared the wreckages and debris from the road as wellas determine the directions from which the vehicles were travelling from.
Police are investigating cases of culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving. North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono who is saddened by the loss of lives wishes to convey her condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the horrific crash and also wish the injured motorist a speedy recovery. MEC Mohono appealed to motorists to reduce speeding which accounts for most accidents and fatalities on public roads.
