North West head on collision claims four lives and injures three others

Four people died and three others were seriously injured in a head on collision involving two vehicles. The tragic accident allegedly caused by a bakkie that was driving without headlights occurred on the R24 Rustenburg-Magalies road in the North West province on Sunday night.

It is alleged that a Ford Bantum bakkie driven by a 28 year old male without headlights had veered into the lane of an oncoming Opel Kadet and collided with it at around 21hoo near Cynthiana Park driving range and City Jive Pub, about 2 kilometres outside Rustenburg. The bakkie was driving from the direction of Magalies towards Rustenburg while the Opel Kadet with six occupants was heading towards Magalies from Rustenburg.

Two passengers who were in the Opel Kadet, a 32 year old pregnant woman and an infant male child died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the bakkie and another male infant passenger died on arrival at Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital. 

The 33 year old driver of the Opel Kadet, two woman passengers, one in her 30s and the other in her 40s were admitted to hospital with serious injuries. In conveying condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the accident and wishing the injured road users a speedy recovery, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Desbo Mohono cautioned motorists against fatigue.

MEC Mohono confirmed that police are investigating cases of culpable homicide and or reckless driving. They have already notified their next of kin but the names of the deceased are withheld until their next of kin have produced proof of their relation.
