North West Government observes Mandela International Day

North West Provincial Government joins the world in observing Mandela International Day

Mahikeng – As the world was yesterday commemorating Nelson Mandela International Day, various North West Members of Executive Council, Executive Mayors and Mayors joined forces and led a number of community work activities aimed at making a difference and inspiring change in different communities. Under the theme “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are”, the provincial leaders spent their time providing public services and donating gifts to the vulnerable communities.  

Part of these activities included the visiting of Vontershoop community outside Morokweng village in Kagisano Molopo Local Municipality, where MEC Boitumelo Moiloa of Social Development distributed food parcels and blankets to the needy, this as part of the department’s Social Relief of Distress drive. 

In Moses Kotane Local Municipality, MEC Gaoage Molapisi of Public Works and Roads visited Dimakatso Care Centre in Manamakgoteng village outside Moruleng which houses the neglected and vulnerable children, where he participated in the centre renovations and planting of vegetable seeds. 

The MEC for Health, Madoda Sambatha led the departmental team in handing over food parcels and healthcare kits for the sick at Tswelelang Hospice in Wolmaranstad, Maquassi Hills Local Municipality, before planting trees at the centre.    

Furthermore, the MEC for Finance, Motlalepula Rosho, donated school shoes to the needy learners in Tigane, Kabelano and Bakang Primary Schools in Klerksdorp, Matlosana Local Municipality. 

Emmanuel Old Age Home in Mmakau village outside Brits, Madibeng Local Municipality and Boitumelong Old Age Home in Bloemhof, Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality, were visited by MEC Sello Lehari of Community Safety and Transport Management and MEC Lenah Miga of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs respectively, where they spent their 67 minutes cleaning and repainting the homes, and donating exercising equipment for the elderly. MEC Miga also visited Reatlegile Children and Youth Care Centre in Mahikeng where she was joined by departmental officials in cleaning and donating food and other amenities. 

Equally, Executive Mayors of the four districts in the province, joined by their local municipalities’ Mayors, also visited various communities including old age homes, where food parcels were distributed, and handing over of a refurbished house and a newly built house to identified beneficiaries. 

The Mmabana Mahikeng Centre has also as part of commemorating Mandela International Day, started a Visual Arts Exhibition where all artworks and garments produced by learners and their tutors are on display. The week-long exhibition will end on Friday, 22 July.   

Today, 19 July, MEC Kenetswe Mosenogi of the Department of Economic Development, Conservation and Tourism, will visit the Tlokwe Youth Centre for Excellence to donate toiletries, beds, linen, educational toys and recreational equipment, as well as centre renovations. 

This year’s theme is a clarion call to each and every sector of the South African community to be of service to those around them, particularly the vulnerable and the environment. It also reminds all that through smaller solidary, we can all try to make the world a better place. 

Premier of the North West Bushy Kaobitsa Maape has commended the leadership of the provincial government and all citizens for doing what they can, with what they have, in their respective communities, saying this day must motivate all of us to continue pulling together to make our province and the country a better place.
