North West Government to improve service delivery in municipalities

Service delivery would never be the same in different municipalities across the province for the 2011/12 financial year. This is according to the North West Premier, Thandi Modise, during her State of the Province Address (SOPA) delivered in the Provincial Legislature.

Premier Modise said the provincial government would work closely with municipalities in building capacity to meet social and development needs of the local communities.

Addressing issues of water challenges, Modise said the government had set aside an amount of R50 million for water and sanitation projects in seven municipalities across the province.

In this regard, Modise said the provincial government was working closely with the water boards and National Department of Water Affairs to resolve water problems in the province.

“We hope we will go a long way to resolving the water crisis,” she said, outlining further that they needed to start with water harvesting initiatives as part of water conservation management in the province.

In an effort to accelerate service delivery in the province, the Premier said the Department of Local Government together with six municipalities had initiated community work programmes focusing on waste management, operations and maintenance.

She said these projects which were expected to start in the next financial year, would approximately create about 500 jobs and improve access to free basic services.
