Over 1 500 jobs were created during implementation of 401 food security projects to alleviate poverty and provide food to needy households across the North West province, Premier Thandi Modise revealed during the State of the Province Address on Friday.
“The vision of the National Development Plan is that people should be able to access high-quality basic services that enable them to be well nourished, healthy and increasingly skilled, North West has proved to be on par,” said Premier Modise.
The Premier reported that the provincial government had also launched the new revitalised Kgora Farmer Training Centre to serve as a world class, accredited, income-generating farmer training centre that emulates “learning by doing” for emerging farmers.
Training offered at the centre focuses on household food security, primary production and agro-processing value adding, with the view to reduce poverty, create decent employment and improve rural livelihood.
Other milestones that were highlighted by Modise included the launched Mahikeng and Taung Farmers markets to improve access to the markets for smallholder producers. The provincial department of Agriculture and Rural Development is looking into the feasibility of the projects to be launched in Dr Kenneth Kaunda and Bojanala Platinum, districts later this year.
A farming empowerment and skills project for people living with Aids which is an initiative of the Premier was also launched for vulnerable groups to be taught how to plough their own food to ensure that they have a supply of nutritious food.
