North West in final district housing performance evaluations

The North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison is to evaluate performance of housing projects of over R250 million under construction within the jurisdiction of Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality. The technical engagement with municipalities and housing developers is to be heldonWednesday at the District Municipality Chambers in Mahikeng.

The objective of the session is to accelerate housing delivery, strengthen monitoring of housing projects for appropriate and timeous intervention in order to minimise the phenomenon of “blocked” projects.

MEC Desbo Mohono says that the technical engagement to be led by the Head of Department for the Human Settlements Branch of the department, Thupi Mokhatla is part of intensifying zero tolerance of shoddy work in its housing projects as her department has resolved to deal decisively with non-performance and poor workmanship in housing projects.

Mohono has vowed that the process will inevitably result in termination of contracts in the interest of the homeless.

The district housing performance evaluation sessions, the last of which is to be held on Thursday in the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality are aimed at strengthening working relations with all municipalities and developing a uniform plan of action to address housing delivery challenges facing communities.

The provincial department is constructing 3 802 housing units spread across Mafikeng, Ramotshere Moiloa, Ratlou, Ditsobotla and Tswaing municipalities in Ngaka Modiri Molema District.

R222 million has been set aside for construction of 3395 housing units spread across Rustenburg, Moses Kotane, Kgetleng Rivier, Madibeng and Moretele local municipalities in Bojanala Platinum District Municipality.

Mohono’s department is in the process of reviewing its Provincial Multi-Year Housing Development Plan for the delivery of 28 840 housing units over the next three years.
