An investigation into expenditure related to scholar transport in the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport for transportation of 31 000 learners in rural and farming communities was approved by the Executive Council of the North West Province during its sitting held in Mahikeng on Wednesday.
The comprehensive investigation is among others also expected to cover criterion for appointment of 125 transport operators (98 of whom were appointed on five year contract and 27 on month-to-month contract), disparities in payments and involvement of officials of the department in the scholar transport.
The resolve was taken after Acting MEC for the department, Raymond Elisha reported that the budget allocated for scholar transport had been depleted.
While the provincial government through Provincial Treasury is considering an urgent request for additional injection of R129 million required for the service to be provided until the end of the financial year, North West Premier Mme Thandi Modise has directed that everything should be done to ensure that the service is not disrupted as learners are either busy with or preparing for examinations.
Exco directed that departments should explore the future of farm schools in the province in line with proposed land and planned human settlement development programmes.
