Eighty-eight unroadworthy vehicles, 34 freight vehicles, 22 busses and 10 taxis were taken off the road in the past week .The milestone brings to 135 the number of vehicles discontinued since North West Road traffic management authorities embarked on special public transport operations two weeks ago, Provincial MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono announced on Wednesday.
MEC Mohono said that 7378 vehicles of which 4549 vehicles were public transport vehicles, 3829 freight transport vehicle were stopped and screened on public roads across the province in the past week alone. Six hundred and sixty-two of these vehicles were issued with tickets for defects such as worn out tyres, dysfunctional indicators, headlights, hooters etc.
Mohono says that 17 drivers were arrested for operating public transport vehicles without taxi and or public transport permits whilst three were arrested for drunken driving.
The special public transport operations which support the National Rolling Enforcement Plan (NREP) are to be intensified in order to reduce road accidents involving public transport vehicles as the province 24/7 rotation shifts for road traffic law enforcement as from 1 October 2011.
The NREP supports the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety which aims at reducing road fatalities and accidents by half over the next ten years.
