North West Dikgosi gearing for success on their strategic plan

In what could be described as a total turn around in the administration of traditional leadership, the North West House of Traditional Leadership inclusive of all Dikgosi in the Province held its first strategic plan at the Wigwam hotel outside Rustenburg recently.

The 4 day Strategic Planning workshop for Dikgosi came as a result of the recent reconstitution of the Local and Provincial Traditional leadership houses elected to serve the five year term as prescribed by the Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Act 41 of 2003 and North West House of Traditional Leaders Act No. 3 of 2009.

North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, China Dodovu during his message of encouragement said one of the department’s key priorities is to stabilise governance in key traditional leadership areas.

He said traditional leaders are not only an integral part of the system of local government, but are also a vital element in the social, political and cultural establishment of our communities. I am extremely excited that we are heading in the right direction because this workshop is critical in ensuring that all those elements are addressed accordingly.

“Our understanding is that the institution of traditional leadership and the institutions of the modern government are located along the parallel line where the traditional world meets the modern-state administration. Furthermore, traditional leaders continue to play a tremendous role in conflict resolutions pertaining to land and mineral resources, chieftaincy, succession, criminal and civil cases as well as adding meaningful inputs in the administration of the local government system”, said MEC Dodovu.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Provincial House of Traditional Leadership Kgosi Madoda Zibi had during his opening remarks indicated that the institution of traditional leadership has a mammoth task which includes amongst others to ensure fulfilled and well cared for communities, hence it was deemed fit and crucial to host such a workshop in order to craft a framework that will serve as a guiding tool to continuously and effectively create developmental and accountable institutions of traditional leadership.

”It is time for our communities to be constantly engaged and fully participate in all matters of their interest, the final document emanating from the debates held on the four day session will be the guiding rule for the next five year term and further ensure that communities are in all earnest informed on the operations of the house of traditional leadership’’ said Kgosi Zibi
