North West Premier Mme Thandi Modise has ordered all provincial departments to settle debts owed to municipalities as non-payment is putting a strain on them.
The directive was issued by Premier Modise at the Executive Council (Exco) meeting held in Mahikeng on Wednesday.
“All consumers of services including private persons, government and state owned entities have an obligation to support municipalities by paying what is due to them. We cannot afford to pay lip-service and expect municipalities to be viable and deliver quality services,” said Modise.
Exco noted that the Provincial Department of Local Government and Traditional affairs is developing a long-term intervention plan to rescue Mahikeng Local Municipality and other struggling municipalities. The plan is part of local government turn-around strategy.
