The numbers of stock theft, robberies and burglary at businesses had declined in the North West Province over the past financial year. This was revealed by the North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono during the tabling the 2010/11 crime statistics analysis report to the Portfolio Committee on Public Safety in the Provincial Legislature in Mahikeng on Tuesday afternoon.
Stock theft had decreased by 13%, whereas both burglary at businesses and robberies dropped by 7% during the period April 2010 to March 2011, MEC Mohono further outlined that contact crime had also dropped by 6%.Although there is a decrease on crime rate in the province, the MEC said there are areas that still require focused attention and further committed that her department to do all its best to reach the national annual target of reducing all serious crimes by 4 to 7%.
Mohono said her department will continue working with and further strengthen support to Community Policing Forums and conduct more community engagement sessions. The community engagement sessions were informed by a general observation that communities lack information with regards to how the criminal justice system works which impacts negatively on service delivery.
She said her department intends to strenghten cooperation and to reinforce partnership between the police and communities, through such endeavors as they will impact positively into reducing the rate of crime in the province.
The MEC and the South African Police Service Provincial Commissioner, Luitenant General Zukiswa Mbombo are scheduled to present the annual crime analysis reportto elected public representatives at municipal level, traditional leaders, Provincial Community Policing Board, Cluster Community Policing Boards, Community Policing Forums, representatives of the business sector, farmers unions, non-government organisations, community based organisations, representatives of departments that comprise the Provincial Justice Crime Preventionand Safety Cluster, Station Commanders and other role-players at Taung Mmabana on Friday, October 28, 2011.
