Strong winds and heavy rainfall caused damage to private and public property
Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds have damaged a number of homes and public facilities, with roofs blown away in some municipalities several affected communities.
Roofs of ten (10) houses were blown away in different villages of Ratlou Local Municipality, four (4) houses in Tswelelang township of Maquassi Hills Local Municipality , and a number of houses were also affected in Motlhabane, Motangwaneng, Witranjie, Obakeng and Molatedi in Bojanala Bojanala Platinum District.
Public property affected include Walter Letsie Primary School in Greater Taung, Ikgomotseng Primary School in Mamusa, Boitumelong Clinic in Lekwa Teemane and Mogoditshane School in Moses Kotane Local Municipality.
Provincial, District and Local Disaster management teams have been activated and are on the ground conducting assessments across the province to establish the full extent of the damages. The teams are also coordinating interventions and humanitarian relief to affected communities with relevant provincial government departments and stakeholders such as the Department of Social Development and SASSA.
COGTA urges residents to remain extremely vigilant, closely monitor official weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather and move to safer locations when their homes or structures may be vulnerable to strong winds.
The PDMC will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as and when the verified information becomes available.
