MEC Kegakilwe intervenes at Kgetlengrivier municipality
The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the North West has moved in swiftly to assist Kgetlengrivier local municipality and will be deploying a financial expert to work with the municipality to turn around its finances such that the municipality is able to among other things, meet is financial obligations and render services.
The department has also roped in other stakeholders such as water utility, Magalies Water and the Department of Water and Sanitation to assist the municipality which has been faced with service delivery challenges especially the provision of water.
As a contingency plan, Magalies Water will augment the water supply by increasing the number of water tankers to communities affected by the water challenge which has been caused by ageing infrastructure resulting in frequent breakdowns of water pipelines from Koster dam, Witrand booster pump station and Koster water treatment works.
The municipality has been experiencing financial difficulties mainly caused by non-payment of services by the residents and has been struggling to pay workers salaries and third parties with the exception of medical aids. The municipality relies on municipal grants such as Municipal System Improvement Grant (MSIG) and Equitable Shares (ES) to run financial services.
Meanwhile, MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Mothibedi Kegakilwe, will on Thursday, (13 February) meet with councillors, officials, union representatives, members of the ratepayers association at before addressing a community meeting at Reagile community hall at 14h00.
