A partnership of the North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison together with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the North West Provincial Community Policing Board is to roll out a province wide community engagement programme aimed at addressing complaints related to functioning of the criminal justice system. The first session of the programme expected to be run for the next six months is to be hosted by the Wolmaranstad Cluster on Friday, 3 June 2011 at Tswelelang Stadium in Wolmaranstad.
In announcing the programme, MEC Desbo Mohono said that the programme to be rolled out throughout the 12 clusters in the province is aimed at creating awareness regarding the implementation of the programmes of the Criminal Justice System role players and indentifying challenges, gaps and issues of concern that need to be addressed.
Mohono added that the need for the engagements is informed by a general observation that communities lack information with regard to how the criminal justice system works which impacts negatively on service delivery. Numerous complaints from communities regarding services rendered by police also confirm the need and relevance of the envisaged community engagements.
Sector departments to participate in the programme like will empower communities on matters related to the criminal justice system, which includes among others issues of bail, charter for victims of crime, child justice courts, cases closed as undetected, sexual offences intervention, school safety, issues of liquor license and others.
